MATH INSTRUCTION and HOMEWORK: Please take a moment to read below:
Math Homework may look different than you'd expect. I will be using a Blended Learning approach. I will be assigning short videos with a preview learning opportunity. Students are expected to watch the video as part of their homework, and work to gain an understanding of the basic concept we will be working with in class. Technically we are flipping the homework with the initial direct instruction. This way your child can watch the video multiple times, or pause as needed. They can form questions around the parts they don't understand and when they arrive to class we can attend to their questions, review and clarify for them. For those who come to class with a solid sense of the lesson's goals will engage in deeper understanding and practice while in class. With this approach we are trying to provide more individualized instruction for each student. Hopefully this will take the burden off of families trying to figure out how to help their child (we have found that this cuts down on frustration that parents have and friction between parent and child when things are brought home and not fully understood). We will also expect that your child will practice IXL activities for at least 15 minutes a night. We do see a correlation between number of minutes on IXL with improved progress and test scores. If you do not have access to an online service, please let me know and an alternate viewing opportunity will be arranged.
